Sir, put this painting up in strong light and in such a place that the observer can stand some distance away from it; in this way it will scintillate best, was written by Rembrandt to Constantijn Huygens in a letter dated 27 January 1639.
To be more precisely: it was not in the letter itself. It was in the postscript to the letter that he made one of the few known remarks on his own work.
